I hadn’t had flare ups in a few years, but a couple of months into getting the shots I started having horrible flare ups. It has been a year and a half and I’ve lost 60 pounds, 20 away from my goal. Yet, I’m miserable and in constant pain. Can anyone relate and offer advice?

Are GLP-1 medications like semaglutide making your HS worse?

You're experiencing something that other myHSteam members have noticed too. While some research suggests GLP-1 drugs might help HS symptoms, the results are mixed and based on small studies. More importantly, individual experiences vary greatly.

One myHSteam member shared a similar experience: "I've lost 100 pounds. They are less frequent but worse." Another member lost 85 pounds and saw improvement, while others found weight loss didn't change their symptoms at all.

Here's what you should consider:

Weight loss doesn't cure HS, and losing weight doesn't guarantee symptom improvement. Some people find their flares become less frequent but more severe, which sounds similar to your situation.

Steps to take:

Talk to your dermatologist immediately about your increased flare-ups. They can assess whether the medication timing is coincidental or potentially contributing to your symptoms, and adjust your HS treatment plan.

Your current HS treatment may need updating. Options include antibiotics, corticosteroids, or biologics that target immune system inflammation.

Don't suffer through constant pain while pursuing weight loss goals. Your quality of life matters, and there are effective HS treatments available that can work alongside your weight management efforts.
