Has anyone been on a GLP-1 drug and how has it affected their HS?
Some myHSteam members have shared experiences with weight loss (which GLP-1 drugs can help with), though not specifically about the medications themselves. Results have been mixed:
- One member who lost 85 pounds saw a difference with fewer flare-ups
- Another member lost 100 pounds and found flares were less frequent but worse when they happened
- A different member lost significant weight but still experienced flare-ups
Research on GLP-1 drugs and HS is still very limited. Small studies have shown some promise - one study of 30 people found semaglutide reduced HS flares and improved quality of life, and another study of 14 people taking liraglutide for three months saw reduced HS severity. However, these studies were small, so more research is needed.
GLP-1 drugs may help HS indirectly through:
- Better blood sugar control (high blood sugar can slow wound healing)
- Weight loss (which may reduce inflammation and friction in affected areas)
- Potential anti-inflammatory effects
Since you're considering a GLP-1 drug for diabetes, it's worth discussing with your GP how it might affect both conditions. Make sure to mention all your current HS treatments to check for any potential interactions.
