The itching is thought to be caused by a few things:
- Histamine release from the nodules and abscesses in affected skin
- Nerve irritation from scarring that develops over time
- Inflammation in and around the affected areas
Areas like the armpits, groin, and thighs tend to be the itchiest. It can also get worse at night, making sleep really difficult — something many myHSteam members know all too well. The tricky part is trying not to scratch, since scratching over a lesion can be really painful — as one myHSteam member put it, realizing you've just scratched the top off a lesion is a pain that's very real.
The good news is there are ways to get relief. A dermatologist can help figure out the best approach for your specific situation.
