Great question — and one many people with HS wonder about. Stress is known to be a common trigger for HS flares. When the body is under stress, the immune system can react in ways that worsen inflammation, which may lead to more frequent or more severe boils and lesions.

When a boil forms, the immune system sends white blood cells to the area to fight bacteria. This process creates pus — a mix of immune cells, bacteria, and dead tissue. So if stress is ramping up immune activity, it can potentially contribute to more inflammation and pus production. Here are some things worth keeping in mind:

- Stress management may help reduce the frequency of flares
- Warm compresses applied several times a day can help boils drain more comfortably
- Never squeeze or pop a boil — this can spread infection and make things significantly worse
- Talk to a dermatologist if boils are becoming more frequent, larger, or more painful

Emotional wellbeing is genuinely part of managing HS, so it's worth bringing up stress as a factor with your healthcare provider. They can help create a plan that addresses both the physical and emotional sides of living with HS.
