I've talked to several people who no longer have HS issues due to weight loss. I am now at that stage because I've dealt with this disease for so long. I've gained weight because of pain and limited ability. I use to think it was a fluffy person thing, until I met women who were thin and still had it. When I watch YouTube videos, I found it's all sizes. I've always liked working out and haven't been able to do so on years. I have a upcoming bariatric appointment; my mind is made up. God bless you!

Weight loss doesn't guarantee that flares will go away, but it can help reduce their frequency and severity for some people. It's not a cure, and HS can affect people of all body sizes.

The connection between weight and HS goes beyond just friction and rubbing β€” though that is definitely part of it. Here's what's actually going on:

- Skin folds and friction β€” More skin folds can increase rubbing, which may trigger flares in common HS areas like the thighs, stomach, and underarms
- Sweating β€” Higher body weight can lead to more sweating, which contributes to hair follicles becoming blocked and eventually bursting
- Hormones β€” Higher body weight can raise androgen levels, which are directly linked to HS
- Inflammation β€” Excess weight is associated with increased inflammation throughout the body, which can make HS worse since it's already an inflammatory condition So it's really a combination of physical factors (like rubbing) AND internal ones (like hormones and inflammation) working together.

One myHSteam member shared, "I've lost 60 pounds with absolutely no improvement," while others have seen significant relief. Results truly vary from person to person.

It's worth talking to a dermatologist before starting any weight loss plan, as dramatic weight loss can sometimes create excess skin that leads to more skin folds β€” which could actually increase friction.
