Members shared extensive experiences identifying food triggers that worsen their hidradenitis suppurativa symptoms, with dairy and sugar emerging as the most frequently mentioned culprits, followed by nightshade vegetables, fried or greasy foods, yeast, and alcohol. Many community members described significant improvement or even remission after eliminating these triggers through elimination diets, with several noting that cutting out dairy and sugar together made the biggest difference in reducing flare frequency and severity. A recurring theme was the highly individual nature of HS triggers, with members encouraging others to experiment systematically to identify their own patterns, while also noting that non-food factors like stress, hormones, tight clothing materials, deodorant, and heat can play equally important roles in managing this challenging condition.

Food that causes inflammatory triggers such as cheese & dairy, processed foods, fatty red meat, cured meat (sausages, prosciutto)….and a super trigger is ALCOHOL, SMOKING, STRESS & OVERWEIGHT

I researched what foods triggered HS. Nightshade and cows dairy. I did an elimination diet, where I didn’t eat any of the foods at least for 30-60-90 days. Typically 30 is fine. Then I slowly introduced one food group. For a week. Then as soon as I got flare or pain, I knew it was a trigger.

Mine was immediately. I ate a French fry (white potato) and automatically the areas started to burn and swell and drain heavier. Same with cows dairy. That was my response

Night shade foods, eating too much dairy, too much sugar.

I’ve accomplished this around 90% and have lost 65 plus pounds since May of 2022.

I’ve also noticed that eating too many fried foods can also cause outbreaks as well.

I haven’t had an outbreak since Aug/Sept of last year so e so.
