Antibiotics are a common part of HS treatment, and the type prescribed usually depends on how mild or severe your symptoms are. Even though HS isn't caused by infection, antibiotics can help calm inflammation, reduce bacteria on the skin, and manage symptoms like pus and drainage.

There are two main categories:

Topical (applied to skin) — usually for mild HS:
- Clindamycin (most common)

Oral (taken by mouth) — usually for moderate to severe HS:
- Doxycycline
- Minocycline
- Tetracycline
- Clindamycin
- Rifampin
- Dapsone
- Erythromycin
- Metronidazole
- Moxifloxacin
- Linezolid

Combination therapy — like oral clindamycin paired with rifampin — can be especially effective for more severe cases. It's worth knowing that long-term antibiotic use (sometimes up to 3 months) carries some risks, including antibiotic resistance. In fact, over 80% of HS lesions in one study showed resistance to common antibiotics. A myHSteam member shared, "I've been on so many antibiotics for HS that I've become resistant."

Always follow your doctor's guidance closely on dosage and duration to help reduce that risk.
