Finding the right deodorant when you sweat a lot and have HS can feel like a full-time job! Since sweat and friction can both irritate HS-prone skin, an antiperspirant (which actually reduces sweating) may work better for you than a regular deodorant (which just masks odor).

A dermatologist recommends newer zirconium-based clinical strength antiperspirants, such as:

- Secret Clinical Strength
- Dove Clinical Protection

These are considered much less irritating than older aluminum chloride-based formulas. It's also worth knowing that antiperspirants tend to work better when applied at night rather than during the day. When choosing any deodorant or antiperspirant, try to avoid these common irritants:

- Aluminum chloride (older formulas)
- Parabens
- Artificial fragrances or alcohol-based scents
- Baking soda, essential oils, or talc (even in "natural" products)

Always test a new product on a small area of skin first, and never apply deodorant to open wounds or lesions. It's a good idea to check with your dermatologist before trying anything new, especially given how sensitive HS skin can be.
