I've been on BC for 10+ years and it seems to help with the severity of flares. I am stage 2 and compared to when I wasn't on BC my Flares aren't as frequent or ER worthy, hope this helps!

Yes, birth control does seem to help some people with HS — but results vary from person to person. Hormones are believed to play a role in HS flares, and birth control can help balance those hormone levels.

A 2021 study found that 54% of participants had fewer abscesses and nodules after taking birth control pills. It tended to work better for those who noticed a link between their flares and their menstrual cycle. myHSteam members have shared mixed experiences:

- "No new flares since October! I really think birth control is working for me."
- "My daughter is much better now that she takes a birth control pill daily. Hormones definitely contribute to this."
- "It didn't work for me. I was put on birth control a few years ago and still had really bad breakouts!"
- One member said it caused intense itching at their HS sites until it cleared their system.

So while it's genuinely helpful for some, it's not a guaranteed fix for everyone. It's worth having a conversation with a dermatologist to weigh the potential benefits and risks based on your specific situation. They can help figure out if it's a good fit for you.
