What a wonderful step-parent you are for advocating so strongly for your stepson. Losing the ability to compete and train as an MMA fighter while dealing with HS is a significant loss, and it makes complete sense that his mental health is struggling. He's not alone in feeling this way.

What a wonderful step-parent you are for advocating so strongly for your stepson. Losing the ability to compete and train as an MMA fighter while dealing with HS is a significant loss, and it makes complete sense that his mental health is struggling. He's not alone in feeling this way.

Finding a counselor who truly "gets it" can make a huge difference. Here are some steps to help find the right fit:

- Ask his dermatologist for a referral to a mental health provider who has experience working with HS patients or people managing chronic pain
- Contact the HS Foundation (hs-foundation.org) β€” they may be able to connect him with resources or providers familiar with HS
- Consider online therapy β€” it's flexible, often more affordable, and can be done from home during flares. Many platforms let you filter by specialty and gender preference
- Look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) β€” this type of therapy is especially helpful for building coping skills and reshaping negative thought patterns, which sounds like exactly what he's looking for If he ever needs immediate support, the 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline (call or text 988) is available anytime. The SAMHSA helpline at (Phone number can only be seen by the question and answer creators) can also help locate affordable mental health care 24/7.

As a myHSteam member once shared, living with HS is like training for a marathon β€” it takes ongoing work and the right support team. Your stepson already has a great corner person in you. πŸ₯Š
