You will most likely get a painful boil in your armpit. Happen to me so many times. I just had to go get my left armpit drained because I hate that hair under my arm so I shaved it and like I said I got a big painful boil. So definitely be careful maybe just trim the hair.

Should you shave your armpits with hidradenitis suppurativa?

Shaving is generally not recommended for people with HS in the armpits. Many myHSteam members have found that shaving can make flare-ups worse or trigger new symptoms.

Here's why shaving can be problematic:

- Shaving can cause tiny cuts or micro-tears in the skin
- These small injuries may trigger inflammation and worsen HS symptoms
- The irritation can lead to new flare-ups in affected areas

A myHSteam member shared: "I, myself, haven't shaved in years and don't plan to. It's too scary --- makes my flare-ups worse." Another simply advised, "DO NOT SHAVE! ONLY TRIM!"

If you want to manage hair in your armpits, consider these safer alternatives:

- Use a beard trimmer or electric trimmer to keep hair short without cutting the skin
- Try laser hair removal, which many people with HS find helpful (though it can be expensive)
- Talk to your dermatologist about what's safest for your specific situation

Some people with HS find their symptoms aren't affected by shaving, but it's best to discuss this with your dermatologist before trying it, especially if you have active flare-ups.
