Bimzelx (bimekizumab) is a newly approved treatment for moderate to severe HS that was approved by the FDA in November 2024. It's the first biologic that blocks both IL-17A and IL-17F, two inflammatory proteins that contribute to HS symptoms.
In clinical trials, about half of participants achieved at least a 50% reduction in HS symptoms after four months. Some people saw even better results, with a 75% improvement. The benefits lasted through 48 weeks of treatment.
After two years of treatment, the results were even more impressive:
- Over 86% of people maintained a 75% or greater improvement in symptoms
- More than 83% remained flare-free
- More than half were classified as having mild HS after two years
Bimzelx is typically given as an injection every two weeks for 16 weeks, then monthly after that.
The most common side effects include upper respiratory infections, headaches, fungal infections, and injection site reactions. Like other biologics, it can increase your risk of infections since it affects the immune system.
