HS is indeed a systemic inflammatory disease that affects more than just the skin. It is classified as an immune-mediated inflammatory disease that activates inflammatory pathways throughout the body, including the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord).

The chronic inflammation from HS can affect multiple body systems and has been strongly linked to several metabolic conditions. Research has shown significant connections between HS and metabolic syndrome. People with HS are:
• 71% more likely to be obese
• 41% more likely to have diabetes
• 19% more likely to have high blood pressure
• 14% more likely to have high blood fat levels

The ongoing inflammation from HS can cause abnormalities in molecules that affect metabolism. While researchers are still studying whether HS triggers metabolic syndrome or vice versa, there is clear evidence that the conditions are related. Some people even notice that their HS flares worsen when certain metabolic factors, like blood sugar, are elevated.
