What is the connection between fatty liver disease and hidradenitis suppurativa (HS)?
People with HS have an increased risk of developing liver problems, including fatty liver disease. This may occur because fat accumulation in the liver can increase inflammation levels in the body. Some common HS risk factors, like smoking and obesity, can also trigger liver issues.
Common symptoms of liver problems include:
• Fatigue
• Pain or discomfort in right side of abdomen
• Jaundice (yellow skin/eyes)
• Itchiness
• Nausea
• Poor appetite
• Dark urine
• Light-colored stool To help reduce your risk of liver problems while managing HS:
• Talk to your doctor about medication risks, as some HS treatments like long-term antibiotics and corticosteroids can affect the liver
• Monitor for any new symptoms, especially persistent fatigue or right-sided abdominal pain
• Discuss your individual risk factors with your healthcare provider
• Follow your prescribed HS treatment plan
Remember that liver symptoms can be subtle, so regular check-ups with your healthcare provider are important for monitoring your overall health.
