Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) has three stages known as the Hurley staging system:

Stage 1 (Mild):
- Single or isolated abscesses
- No scarring or tunnels under the skin
- Affects about 68% of people with HS
- Most easily treated stage
- Often responds well to oral or topical medications

- Multiple connected sinus tracts (tunnels)
- Extensive scarring
- Recurring abscesses
- Can affect entire areas of the body
- Most challenging stage to treat

Most people (55-70%) with HS never progress beyond Stage 1, especially with proper treatment.
