A couple things I learned is that "
when doctors don't know much" makes a difference what expectations are for a primary or a dermatologist. Dermatologists are more educated in HS and not everyone is aware. Also, the antibiotics aren't going to last forever, just like any other infection, your body gets used to them and they quit working overall. On my sores that are not open I warm compress and use Vicks Vapor Rub cream, helps with pain and drainage and no need to lance. I've had 2 larger than golf balls under arms that drained and 4 the size of XL eggs, large ones removed from groin. I was diagnosed at 16 and have had 47 cysts removed and at least 16 procedures.
There are days that are harder than others and having other illnesses does not make it any easier. I have Fibromyalsia, anxiety, and depression. Osteoarthritis being replaced in knees, degenerative disc disease, and spinal stenosis for a start. But its places like here, were others can understand and relate, you will find information that just might lead to a better day, doctor, resource, explanation, etc. Lending us a reason to keep on trying our best and help make those hard days a lot easier to cope with everything. Its made a difference for me and I hope it helps you as well.

I had a general surgeon extract from my inner thighs and have suffered with scar tissue for 29 years. I had a plastic surgeon remove others in groin, a couple on my ears, and one on my face, totally could not see any scar and only other choice available 4hrs away from where I lived. Since then we moved and a Sanford dermatology clinic was started in that area, I have been going to just a dermatologist since then. My surgeries have also been there. I had a endocrinologist that was also very informative on HS. Otherwise for my most of my life it was a primary and general surgeon, they were the least informed. I would check out virtual visits if care is not provided in your area, that's an option I wish I had to begin with in my journey. I hope this helps.

If you haven’t already, you might find it helpful to look into virtual dermatology consults or teaching hospitals that offer sliding scale fees. It’s not always ideal, but sometimes they have specialists more familiar with HS. Also, if you're open to it, search the "Meet Others" tab on myHSteam and type in your city to see if there are other members in your area who can point you to some local resources.
