Surgeries
A myHSteam Member asked a question 💭

I'm at a stage 4.. large open wounds.. so everyone I'm talking to doctor wise is suggesting surgery. The surgeon I've talked to said he's just worried about the healing process because of the disease HS is .. with that being said is there anyone whose been this bad and had surgeries ? If so how was it for you ? I'm just tired of this..

I just had my first surgery and the surgery in general went well the surgeon has a lot of experience with HS and has done many of these surgeries he removed all the skin all the way down to the muscle and left it open I was advised skin graft was not a good idea with HS he said it will fill in and grow back from the bottom up and there will be no sweat glads or hair follicle there so there will never be a flare in that spot again the only problem I've really had is the wound vac!!! I'm not gonna lie wound vac is nothing nice but if you can deal with it the word is that it will heal in half the time or less with less chance of infection

You need to try to find a plastic surgeon. Or, at least a surgeon who has done more than one of the wide excision surgeries. Skin graphs are iffy. They don't always work.

Well the one surgeon I talked to said he's only done one surgery for HS and it was on the armpit. He said the healing process didn't go as he had planned and it kind of turned him away from doing surgeries for HS. He told me he thinks the best surgery for my wounds would be to do a skin graft. He wants me to first try to get healthier as far as what I eat, exercise , smoking etc... Which I completely understand but with HS comes depression and depression makes it hard to keep those bad habits under control. But I'm still gonna try. I'm also going to talk to other surgeons and get their opinions and maybe find one more confident in doing the surgery. I'm glad to hear you haven't had any problems in those other areas though. Hate hearing about the groin surgery going bad for you I hope that heals soon for you !

I've had multiple wide excision surgeries. The first time was under both my arms. It was massive. I have lupus and don't heal very well and I don't qualify for skin graphs either. When I had that surgery, my lupus was undiagnosed. But! I had relief and peace from the HS for a couple years. It started to come back though. I had another wide excision and I have never had a problem with my armpits since! I had another wide excision in the middle of my chest. 🙄 You could have put a huge fist into the surgical incision! Now, it's barely visible and I have no problem with HS since! 😉 However, I had another surgery in my groin that went very wrong. The doctor did not do what she was supposed to do and it has been a nightmare. What kind of surgery is the doctor considering for you? And, the most important question is, how many of these kind of surgeries has this doctor done?
