Getting a diagnosis for hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) can be a long and frustrating journey. On average, people wait 7 to 10 years from their first symptoms before receiving a proper diagnosis. Many myHSteam members have shared similar experiences of being misdiagnosed for years before finally getting answers. There is no single test that can confirm HS. Instead, diagnosis is based on a combination of factors, including:
- A physical exam looking for typical HS lesions like nodules, abscesses, and tunnels under the skin
- A review of your symptoms and how long you've had them
- Family history of HS
- Ruling out other conditions through additional tests To support the diagnosis, a doctor may also:
- Test fluid from ruptured lesions for bacterial infection
- Perform a skin biopsy (taking a small tissue sample)
- Use ultrasound imaging to detect lesions beneath the skin's surface Seeing a dermatologist — ideally one familiar with HS — gives the best chance of an accurate and timely diagnosis. If your current doctor isn't familiar with HS, it's worth asking for a referral to a specialist.
