I have horrible chin scars from acne well into my 40s that could have been prevented with the right medication and diagnosis which I finally received after visiting the ER for the umpteenth time for an unhealed, draining cyst under my arm. I was told that day it wasn't one cyst it was multiple and they were tunneled but not infected. She diagnosed me with HS and put me on spironolactone which has been amazing but now I have the scars to deal with.

What cosmetics or treatments have helped with HS scarring on the chin and face?

First, it's worth saying β€” what a journey to finally get that diagnosis. It's frustrating that it took so long, but it sounds like the spironolactone is making a real difference, which is wonderful news.

First, it's worth saying β€” what a journey to finally get that diagnosis. It's frustrating that it took so long, but it sounds like the spironolactone is making a real difference, which is wonderful news.

While the search results don't specifically cover cosmetics for covering scars, there are some well-supported options for actually reducing their appearance over time, which may be more satisfying long-term than covering them up.

Some over-the-counter options worth exploring include:

- Silicone gels or sheets β€” One of the most researched OTC scar treatments. They hydrate and protect the skin, and may reduce scar size and stiffness over time. One myHSteam member noted that catching scars early with silicone bandages helped them lighten faster.
- Onion extract creams (like Mederma) β€” Have anti-inflammatory properties, though research results are mixed.
- Vitamin E creams β€” Can help nourish skin, though scientific evidence is limited. Some helpful general tips when using any scar cream or treatment:

- Keep skin clean β€” Gentle washing with mild soap supports healing
- Moisturize regularly β€” Aloe vera or petroleum jelly are good options
- Wear SPF 50+ sunscreen daily β€” This can help fade scars and reduce discoloration over time
- Avoid products with dyes, fragrances, exfoliating acids, or parabens β€” These can irritate skin and potentially trigger flares

If OTC options aren't giving you the results you're hoping for, a dermatologist can discuss more advanced options like steroid injections, laser treatments, dermabrasion, or chemical peels. It's always worth having that conversation, especially since some procedures carry risks like skin discoloration β€” particularly for darker skin tones.

Talking to your dermatologist before starting anything new is always a smart move.
