What products work best for cleaning HS outbreaks?
Benzoyl peroxide can be helpful for HS because it kills bacteria on the skin and helps clear hair follicles. While it's commonly used as a wash rather than wipes, it may offer benefits when combined with other treatments.
Many myHSteam members have found success with benzoyl peroxide products:
- One member uses benzoyl peroxide wash nightly along with clindamycin and steroid cream during flare-ups
- Another uses benzoyl peroxide 5% topical wash twice weekly for outbreaks
- Some use 10% benzoyl peroxide soap in their daily shower routine
Keep in mind that benzoyl peroxide can be drying, so moisturizing afterward is important. It can also bleach fabrics and may cause mild irritation in some people.
For sensitive areas like the groin or buttocks, some find Vaseline helpful. One tip is to apply Vaseline on a tissue before using the bathroom to create a protective barrier, then use it again when wiping to reduce friction.
Since everyone's skin reacts differently, start with a lower percentage if you're concerned about irritation. Work with your dermatologist to find what combination works best for you, as most people need more than one type of treatment for HS.
