My dermatologist said when there is a heavy bacterial load on the skin it gets inflamed. But I think anything that irritates skin like perfume, chemicals in detergents can do it too. I had to quit a certain sanitary pad because something in it inflamed my skin. It had some kind of absorbent foam in it. Who knows what that was made of. Since covid I’ve become allergic to some cheap brands of toilet paper. I don’t get HS or rashes, I just get irritation from it. I think our immune system just starts overreacting to stimulus.
