I'm trying to avoid having one surgery when it should have been something different the second time around if that makes sense. I have heard of instances where docs ( general surgeon) will do the simple less tedious surgery to… read more

There are several surgical options available for treating hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) under the arms, each tailored to the severity and specific characteristics of the condition:

1. **Incision and Drainage of Abscess**: This procedure involves making an incision to drain pus and debris from an abscess. It's generally a temporary solution, primarily aimed at relieving pain and pressure.

2. **Deroofing**: This method involves removing the skin covering an abscess or sinus tract. It can help in reducing the recurrence of abscesses by eliminating the affected tissue.

3. **Wide Excision**: This is a more extensive procedure where the entire affected area, including all lesions and sinus tracts, is removed. This method aims to provide a more definitive solution by removing all diseased tissue, but it may require subsequent skin grafting for wound closure.

4. **Laser Surgery**: Advances in technology have introduced the use of carbon dioxide lasers for cutting around affected areas. This method is noted for its precision and effectiveness in preventing the disease from regaining a foothold, potentially due to its anti-inflammatory effects.

Each of these procedures has its own set of considerations, and the choice of surgery can depend on the individual's specific case of HS, the severity of symptoms, and previous treatment outcomes.
